The Plumbing Issues We See Most Around Here

Frozen and burst pipes. Between lake-effect cold and long stretches below freezing, we get burst-pipe calls every winter — usually exterior walls, crawlspaces, unheated garages and outdoor spigots that never got shut down in the fall. If a pipe lets go, shut the water off at the main and call us immediately.

Tree roots in clay sewer laterals. Older neighborhoods across Sandusky, Norwalk, Fremont and Vermilion still run on clay tile sewer laterals with mortar joints. Mature trees find those joints, and once roots are in, the line clogs on a repeating cycle. A camera inspection shows whether it’s a cutting-and-maintenance situation or a replacement.

Hard water and scale. Municipal supply and rural well water in this region both run hard. That means scale on water heater elements, reduced flow at fixtures, and tank heaters that fail years early. If your heater is popping and rumbling, that’s sediment.

High water tables near the lake. Basements in Huron, Vermilion, Port Clinton and Lakeside Marblehead take on water fast when a pump quits. A sump pump is not optional near the shore, and a backup pump is cheap insurance compared to a finished basement.

Galvanized supply lines. Rusting from the inside out, they choke down flow until two fixtures can’t run at once. If your pressure is bad everywhere and the house is pre-1960, that’s usually why — and repiping fixes it permanently.

Seasonal and cottage properties. Around Marblehead, Catawba and Port Clinton, plenty of homes sit closed part of the year. We handle winterization and spring start-ups so you don’t open the door in April to a flooded floor.

Questions

Plumbing FAQs

It depends entirely on the job. What we can promise is that you’ll know the price before we start — we diagnose on-site, explain what’s wrong, and quote it. Nothing gets done without your approval.

Yes. Burst pipes, sewer backups, no hot water and major leaks. If water is actively running where it shouldn’t be, shut off the main valve and call [PHONE].

A sewer camera inspection answers that in about twenty minutes. Roots and grease usually mean cleaning and a maintenance plan. Collapsed sections, offset joints or a bellied line mean repair or replacement. We won’t quote a replacement we haven’t seen on camera.

A standard tank heater generally runs 8–12 years, less with hard water and no maintenance. Rumbling, rusty hot water, or moisture at the base of the tank are signs it’s near the end. Tankless units typically last significantly longer.

If you have galvanized steel supply lines, recurring pinhole leaks in copper, discolored water, or pressure that’s dropped across every fixture, repiping is usually the permanent fix. We’ll walk the house and give you a straight answer either way.

Most often corroded galvanized pipe narrowing from the inside, a failing pressure regulator, a partially closed main valve, or scale buildup at the fixtures. We diagnose it rather than guessing.

Some jobs do — water heater replacements, repiping, sewer and water service work, and new construction typically require permits and inspection. We handle permitting where it’s required.

In most cases, yes. Same-day drain cleaning is one of the most common calls we run.

Yes — new installs, replacements, battery backup systems and discharge line repairs. If you’re near the lake or in a basement that takes water, we’ll size the pump properly for the pit and the load.

Yes. Underground, rough-in, trim-out and final inspection for residential new builds, plus rough-in work for builders and remodelers.
